This English folk song presents a rather somber tone, with remembrances of those who have gone to their heavenly reward, those saints in “the churchyard.” I love the old cemeteries in England. So many souls from days of old are gathered there. The gentle tempo and the use of guitar (or “C” Instrument) accent the beauty and folk origin of this tune. Because guitar chords are provided, feel free to add other instruments with an “Appalachian” flavor…dulcimer, banjo, mandolin…even cello. The Alto and Soprano II are rather low in the SSA voicing. Please be flexible with the dynamics, and strive for a pleasing tone throughout. Feel free to make adjustments as needed. The B Section of each verse increases the tempo slightly (based on text). Your singers will enjoy this melancholy stroll through an old English cemetery. In sacred choral performances, this arrangement can be used in general worship or on All Saints’ Day.
