This popular ballad by George Gershwin (1926) was originally written as a ragtime piano composition; lively, upbeat, and fast. Because Gershwin’s soloist was having trouble connecting emotionally with the song in a musical, someone found a doll, put it onstage, and the soloist was finally able to sing the song
effectively. The first performance of Someone to Watch Over Me was sung to a doll. This arrangement is an attempt to connect the original Gershwin version with the slower ballad. The tempo range is relatively wide, so select the tempo that suits your ensemble the best. Lyrics have been adjusted for mixed choirs,
and it is hoped that pronouns will be used that are appropriate for your ensemble.
