Tennyson’s poem was published in 1850, with phrases of the text describing the New Year to come, also making reference to the passing of Arthur Henry Hallam, his sister’s fiancé who died at twenty-two. It might be that the bells described within the poem are actually those of England’s Waltham Abbey, pictured here. I selected three verses of the poem for inclusion in this SATB setting. Handbells are optional, but feel free to use any other bell instrument to enhance the piano accompaniment. The “wild bells” do get a bit wild, but that’s the fun of it! Enjoy!
