There are many folk songs that have a “Fare thee well” phrase in the refrain. We never know if the phrase refers to pain and ultimate resolve to leave horrible situations or is actually energetic resolve and clarity to choose relationships. Neither situation seems to call for a song of celebration, unless one has finally made a life decision. Sometimes there is actually joy in the process, and that is the purpose of this setting, inspired by the text of an American folk song. At least the person continues to refer to the one left behind as “honey.” Maybe the entire scenario was an amicable win-win! This setting is an upbeat tune that resembles a folk song with similar subject matter. Countermelodies and descant-like figures are used in harmonies.
