Robert Burns traveled extensively during his rather short life of 37 years, and he lived in many different places. Yet, he longed for the Highlands of Scotland, and he wrote about his beloved home in his poetry and song lyrics. This original setting of My Heart’s in the Highlands seeks to retain the open harmonies characteristic of Scottish music from Burns’ home country, putting the familiar rhythms of bagpipes in the piano accompaniment while the drone of the bagpipe is implied in the optional cello, along with harmonic lines to connect the verses. Enjoy thoughts of home!
