This arrangement of Haydn’s Austrian Hymn describes the extraordinary life of Jesus from the beginning of time with God through the resurrection celebration. The setting begins with awe and wonder in the pairing of the Almighty and Messiah. The birth of Jesus and the surrounding nativity bring a lighter glow to the journey, with increased movement through the ministry and life of Christ. The mood of darkness and uncertainty permeates the crucifixion, with a glorious celebration of the resurrection to follow. Although this octavo is appropriate for many Sundays of the liturgical calendar, it is likely most effective for general worship and the Lenten season. Optional orchestration adds to the unfolding drama in this powerful setting.
