we have seen the lord

This dramatic dialogue is based on the events following the Resurrection of Christ. The piece begins with Thomas (Tenor Solo) grieving over the loss of his friend Jesus. The choir sings the part of the disciples with whom Jesus walked on the Road to Emmaus, singing “We Have Seen the Lord.” Nonetheless, Thomas vows not to believe until he has “proof.” As the protest and “conditions for belief” by Thomas continue, suddenly Jesus (Baritone Solo) appears singing, “Shalom. Peace be unto you. Place your hands in my side, and see that it is I…I am Christ the Crucified.” The following declaration by Thomas is probably one of the stongest in all Biblical writings, “My Lord and my God!” Thomas and Jesus continue in duet over the choral voices. I never found in the scripture where Thomas actually reached to touch the Lord. He really did not need to do so. He just declared his faith based on his profound experience of “seeing Christ” in that moment….just as the other disciples had done. In my opinion, one of the most profound lines in this dramatic presentation is the line by the choir, “for He speaks to us, and He walks beside us.” It is my opinion that in our every day experiences, we “see” the Lord as Christ walks beside us through the difficulties, grief, pain, joys, and challenges of life…..speaking to us through scripture, loving friends, family, nature, art, and music.
