In contrast to the partner song in this set, The Wind is a legato setting of Stevenson’s text, allowing students to contemplate the characteristics and delights of the wind. The accompaniment assists in creating a mood of haunting respect toward the power and abilities of the wind. This is a great piece for teaching vocal breath economy in singing phrases filled with opportunities to teach choral syllabic inflection. Set in a minor key, the vocal harmonies are created with countermelodies and imitation while the wind “blows” through a wide range of dynamics.
