Although written during the Civil War, the text describes the "weary hearts...waiting for the war to cease."  A wonderful piece to introduce syncopation to young choirs, and there is enough relevance to today through the text for singers to identify with its emotional content.  The countermelodies are quite independent, with use of imitation and melodic interest.  The men will love it!
