This piece was written for the Women’s Chorale of my former high school, Colquitt County High School in Moultrie, Georgia. Their director, Kathy Wright has done a wonderful job with the program for many years, and I thought the text was appropriate for the warm South Georgia weather. The poetry had been on my desk for several years, and I had tried many times to put a melody together. Finally, I realized that the meter must be 5/4, an irregular meter, but one that enhanced Shakespeare’s Sonnet XVIII. This text is filled with imagery, and the challenge I experienced had to do with creating music that would bring the text to life without losing the gentle love for the object of one’s affection. This piece is filled with emotion: love, wonder, resolve, uncertainty, and peace. All of these emotions are used to convey numerous aspects of caring, and the piece moves through layers of questioning thought, toward a peaceful, restful, loving resolve.
