This beloved art song for solo voice has been set for choral voices, and speaks of "cruel love" as a magnificent force that draws one hopelessly into a bond with another, whether the love is returned or not.  Though possibly unrealistic, the poet hopes to weaken the pride and resistance of the beloved by serving and always "being there" to provide whatever emotional support is needed.  Thus, the poet hopes the beloved will eventually come to love him/her as one who is indeed cherished.  Even if it never happens, the poet will continue to love the beloved.  The moving melodic lines and the phrasing are wonderful for teaching expressive singing toward a cadence, syllabic inflection, emotional connection with lyrics, and the Italian language.  Pure vowels and beautiful tone are a must for this classic.
